The Microsoft adCenter Advertising Program
Microsoft adCenter™ (formerly MSN adCenter), is the Online Advertising division of the Microsoft Network (MSN) and was the last of the “Big Three” Search Engines (Microsoft™, Google™ and Yahoo!™) to develop its own system for delivering pay per click (PPC) ads through Internet searches.
Until the beginning of 2006 the ads displayed on the MSN search engine were supplied by either Overture or Yahoo. As both the money spent on search marketing, and the market share of their search engine Bing™ grew, Microsoft developed its own PPC advertising system called Microsoft adCenter™.
In August of 2010 Bing™ and Yahoo™ began a partnership which led to both search engines combining forces to compete against the 800 pound gorilla called Google. In late October of this year the transformation was completed with AdCenter taking over the operation and display of PPC ads on Yahoo, as well as on Bing and across the MSN advertising network.AdCenter has been innovative in the field of PPC since it’s original launch, and was the first PPC service to offer ad scheduling by time of day, which prompted Google to quickly follow suite with their AdWords service. The MSN ad interface has continually been improved to make it more user-friendly and new features like report scheduling have been recently added.
The best part of Pay-Per-Click Advertising is that you pay nothing for exposing your brand to millions of prospective customers, and building your brand identity in the process. As is the fundamental basis of PPC, you only pay when a prospect clicks on your ad and enters your website.
How do AdCenter and AdWords Compare?
Firstly I believe that Bing and Yahoo serve a different demographic than Google. That said, I personally am still trying to identify what those demographic groups are. For now let’s look at the raw numbers as reported by ComScore in Sept 2010:
- In September, 69.1 percent of searches carried organic search results from Google, while 23.5 percent of searches were powered by Bing organic results.
- Bing and Yahoo combined accounted for 4.5 Billion searches in the United States, which is 31.5% of the entire number of core searches, which is a tremendous number of surfers and can’t be ignored!
