Amazon.com Review Few of us are natural-born leaders, according to John C. Maxwell, author of Developing the Leader Within You. Fortunately though, "the traits that are the raw material of leadership can be acquired," he promises. "Link them up with desire and nothing can keep you from becoming a leader. This book will supply the leadership principles. You must supply the desire." True to his words, Maxwell offers a detailed and inspiring primer on becoming a leader. Even the Table of Contents reads like a motivational poster.Maxwell (The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader), who is the founder of INJOY, a Christian-based leadership program, debunks the myth that strong leaders must have big egos and spend all their time harnessing personal power. Instead, he elevates leadership to a spiritual act of service: "The growth and development of people is the highest calling of leadership." Maxwell relies on real-life anecdotes, short paragraphs, charts, and numerous lists to make his wisdom accessible. As a result, his writing often seems simplistic, with a self-help tone. Nonetheless, in teaching readers how to bring out the best in themselves as well as others, Maxwell offers a worthwhile life lesson that extends far beyond the workplace. --Gail Hudson

Simple and Powerful: Has Helped Me be a Better Leader August 30, 2010 Rev. Dr. Charles Erlandson (Tyler, Texas United States) There are many books on leadership out there: so many that it's almost impossible to separate the good from the mediocre. I was fortunate enough to have come across this book years ago. It is one of the rare books that I go back to from time to time as I get older and hopefully wiser.
Developing the Leader Within You is an excellent introduction to leadership for a number of reasons. John Maxwell is recognized as a leader in the field of leadership, and this book clearly reflects his long and deep experience with leading. What I like best about the book is not only the depth of knowledge but the fact that the material is presented in such a way that it's easy to read and learn. Each chapter has one key theme, such as: "The Definition of Leadership: Influence" or "The Most Important Ingredient of Leadership: Integrity." All of the main sections within a chapter are also clearly marked, and the lists and diagrams help make the material easier to digest and easier to find when I look back at the book.
The truth is that all of us can be leaders and most of us have already been put in places where we have to lead. This book has helped me understand leadership over the years as I've worked at various churches and in Christian schools. Because I'm an introvert by nature it was difficult for me to see myself as a leader; however, this book has helped me see myself and God's call on my life in a different and more positive way. I like the fact, as well, that Maxwell has outlined different levels of leadership that one may attain. Every time I look back at this book, I find that there are principles from the book that I've already integrated into my life, as well as others that it's now time to work on.
Even an outline of the book suggests just how useful this book can be to many people:
Chapter 1 - The Definition of Leadership: Influence
Chapter 2 - The Key to Leadership: Priorities
Chapter 3 - The Most Important Ingredient of Leadership: Integrity
Chapter 4 - The Ultimate Test of Leadership: Creating Positive Change
Chapter 5 - The Quickest Way to Gain Leadership: Problem-Solving [Tony
Chapter 6 - The Extra Plus in Leadership - Attitude
Chapter 7 - Developing Your most Appreciable Asset: People
Chapter 8 - The Indispensable Quality of Leadership: Vision
Chapter 9 - The Price of Leadership: Self-Discipline
Chapter 10 - The Most Important Lesson of Leadership: Staff Development
Made a Significant Difference in my Leadership Style May 14, 2010 Kristin J. Arnold (Scottsdale, AZ, USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Want to read a great book about personal leadership? I highly recommend Developing the Leader Within You by John C. Maxwell.
I have read this book several times cover to cover, wrote notes in the margins, and worked through several of the exercises to enhance your leadership skills.
He maintains that leadership is the ability to obtain followers and to get people to work for you when they don't have to. Leadership is all about influence - a skill that can be developed.
In the next chapter, he develops the priority principle - 20% of your priorities give you 80% of your production if you spend your time, money and personnel on the top 20% of your priorities.
Maxwell contends that the most important ingredient of leadership is integrity - and that leaders must have higher standards than their followers.
He talks about how to successfully implement change and developing your most important asset: people.
He refers to vision as the indispensable quality of leadership and that people fall into four levels:
* Wanderers: They never see it.
* Followers: They see it but never pursue it on their own.
* Achievers: They see it and pursue it.
* Leaders: They see it, pursue it and help others see it.
Finally, he discusses the price tag of leadership is self-discipline and walks you through a "self-discipline plan."
I firmly believe this book has made a significant difference in my leadership style, outlook and ability to lead others.
It is chock full of exercises, tips and anecdotes that not only make it a pleasure to read, but to apply.
A very insightful read.... April 25, 2010 Jodi R. Gigler (Lower Burrell, PA) I originally purchased this book to read as a class requirement for a project. I had read exerts of other books from John C. Maxwell, but had never actually read an entire book. WOW! His work is very insightful and makes you really think about leaders versus managers. I always wanted to be a manager, but now, I want to be a leader. I don't want people to simply "do what I say" but rather want to follow what I do.
I especially enjoyed Chapter Four - "The Ultimate Test of Leadership: Creating Positive Change." I have discovered over many years of working in many different companies, that the one thing feared the most by employees is change. This chapter gives good advise on how to embrace and implement changes.
The book is really an interesting discussion of all aspects of leadership. I highly recommend for anyone who truly wants to lead and not just manage!
This is an amazing book April 21, 2010 Christian Hermosillo (Blue Bell, PA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I recently got promoted to management position in a pharmacy and really had no experience as a manager. A HR rep recommended this book and I could not put this book down. It gives you a basic understanding of what it means to lead and to manage your staff and resources. This is a must have for someone who needs some guidance in managing people and has some good problem solving strategies, as well as information on how to prioritize you time to make the most out of the time you spend working.
helpful April 19, 2010 D. Petro I've only started reading the book and found it to be a very enlightening, more then i expected.
