Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Francis of Assisi is one of the world's most beloved and popular religious figures--and also one of the most misrepresented. Such is the assertion of Mark Galli, who in this IVP Histories volume strips away the modern gloss in order to discover the real man in his real physical, political, and social context.Writing with lively and engaging style, Galli traces the fascinating adventure of Francis's life, from his hedonistic youth to his emergence as a Christian leader of outstanding influence and passion. The saint revealed here is not the bland, romanticized free spirit of popular misconception, but a complex and contentious man who combined an irradiated mysticism with a very practical Christian commitment and, above all, sought to glorify God as Creator. Francis of Assisi and His World is a "must-read," both for the inspiring story it tells and for the beauty of its art and illustration.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great biography...   June 28, 2006

Mark Galli has written an accessible but intelligent biography of Francis of Assisi. The life of Francis is told in a very engaging format that reads like a story, rather than an academic exercise. However, he includes a great deal of explanatory sidenotes to provide some of the cultural and historical background to allow that story to make sense. There is a lot of artwork included throughout, which integrates interesting images within the text. br / br /As the sure sign of a good biography, I finished the book feeling as if I really understood who Francis was and what his life meant, not only to his contemporaries, but to the broader story of the Church. I would recommend Galli's work to anyone interested in learning more about this great man of the faith.

5 out of 5 stars the formation of holiness   December 15, 2004

This book, along with the others in the series, is an excellent introductory text to understand St. Francis and the world in which he lived, struggled and prayed. The text is lavished with photos, artwork and packed with good history and analysis. The pages are sturdy gloss and the covers are meant to be abused. This is an excellent pocket book and would make a great gift for anyone interested but not too knowledgeable on the life and times of Francis. Total background information is provided for the novice. For the price and content you cannot go wrong with this book, or any of the series. Enjoy!
