Well intentioned, but VERY CHRISTIAN July 28, 2010 E. Bankhead At least I thought that it was very Christian for a relationship book written by a Doctor with no reference towards God or the Bible, both of which are heavily represented in every aspect of the book. I didn't read much into the reviews, just saw an article about marriage counseling and the author recommended this book. Since the author was a doctor and the title sounded like something that might help my marriage I gave it a shot and ordered a copy.
So I was surprised when I began to read it...if you are an agnostic, or even just a different religion besides Christian, you may feel like the author is cramming his religion down your throat. It would make more sense if the title was "Love & Respect in a Christian Marriage".
That being said, once you get beyond the Christian rhetoric the author gives some advice grounded in reality. I don't agree with everything, but I think that there are some very good points and ideas. But I think that it would work best if both partners read the book together and talked about it.
I gave it to my husband to read and told him to ignore the Christian stuff...but I expect that he will become annoyed with the level of bible references and give up on the rest of the content. Maybe the publishers should make a version that cuts out all religious references and leaves the real advice, then they could appeal to a whole new audience.
Awesome Message July 22, 2010 4 in 4.5 This book is so helpful. While it can be a little sappy at times, that's exactly why it's easy to read and understand. Don't get hung up on that. It's well written in that the author is trustworthy and writes a very important message that is easy to understand, remember, and apply to your everyday life.
"Love and Respect" a must read! July 21, 2010 L. Peyton I just finished this book and it is by far the best book on understanding couples I have read. It was a real eye opener for me and the light bulb just kept going off. It is so easy to understand and see what causes the "Crazy Cycle" to flare up now. It is a simple concept with a big impact and makes perfect sense. But as women we must be open to not always blaming the men. I wish I would of read it sooner in life. I know a lot of women who could benefit from reading this book. We need to understand "what we are doing to our marriages". We all think it is the "men" in our lifes but women are very complicated people and we make things more complicated than needed. It is so simple! If love and respect can be applied in our relationships it could save so many marriages! Thank you so much for the knowlege this book has given me, it has change my whole outlook on how I deal with my husband. He is a great leader with a loving heart and is a goodwill man extremely dedicated to his family. I could not see the lack of respect I was showing him. I could only see things through my eyes and not his... I was so jaded by trying to make him see it my way which created more dis-respect to him. My definition of respect and his were not being communicated and heard the same. I only hope now I can do a much better job at see things through his eyes too.
an excellent read. many Christian values! July 1, 2010 Jed Y. Pittman (north fl.) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
this is a must read for anyone that is, ever has been, or ever plans on being in a relationship. it draws on real Godly values and practical advice for couples. it paints an easy to follow and necessary path towards "oneness".
did not speak to us June 26, 2010 Mama Bear (Wilmington, NC) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
My husband and I read this in a small group study with other Christian couples. We did not get anything out of the book. In fact we decided not finish it since it was not speaking to either of us. We both felt the authors language was a bit harsh, especially toward women. As a loving and positive thinking man, my husband did not connect with this. As a woman, I found myself sometimes hurt by the authors words. Although the basic Biblical truth of love and respect is absolutely true, this book divides everything into black and white, leaving too much out. It uses elementary examples that seem too obvious to need to write such a thick book about. It is very repetitive as well. I kept thinking my parents (in their 60's with a horrible relationship) might benefit from a book like this if it used more uplifting language. But young couples and couples that have a happy marriage already standing on the foundation of God's word will probably not get much out of this book. I encourage you to look for a different book to enhance your marriage. If anything, skimming through and just focusing on the verses and their meaning would be more helpful than getting lost in the rhetoric of the author. Hope this is helpful.
