Product Description Jesus judas and mary magdalene cross paths in this version of the rock opera. Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 08/31/2004 Starring: Ted Neeley Yvonne Elliman Run time: 107 minutes Rating: G Director: Norman Jewison
Ted Neeley makes for a wimpy looking Jesus in Norman Jewison's screen adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice "rock opera," which was a smash on stage in the early '70s. Jewison (Other People's Money) adds some good exterior settings in the desert, but Webber and Rice's dialogue-free story (everything is sung, as in a real opera), with its quasi-profundities about the inner demons of principal figures in the life of Christ, is the real hook. Yvonne Elliman sings the show's best-known song, "I Don't Know How to Love Him." --Tom Keogh

Jesus Christ Superstar special edition DVD March 11, 2010 J. Bugeja (Canada) I love this movie, so I was happy to be able to see it again. It is generally a very clear movie, but there are some moments in the movie where the picture freezes. What I like the most about it is the commentary and special features, such as the discussion between Ted Neeley and Norman Jewison. That is a great feature, as well as the gallery, which was so well done, along with the music. It's nice that it was not just pictures. Also, the documentary with Tim Rice, which was very informative. I was a little disappointed that there were no pictures inside the DVD case along with the disc. There is a space there for it, so I think there should have been something like that there. It was a good price at $9.99, although it came to $22 with the shipping. The sound was very good, too, which is very important. I should have asked if there was anything inside the case other than the DVD, but as long as I can play it, and it works, I am happy with it.
Jesus Christ Superstar February 5, 2010 Bettie S. Fraser (canada) Saw the original show many years ago; have seen it 2 or 3 times since.
So HAD to have the DVD. Excellent
A classic rock opera February 3, 2010 Josiah Brown (Houston, TX United States) Some people take this movie/musical too seriously and, for that reason, tend to dislike it. However, I found the entire production to be exceedingly well done and enjoyable, and the music to be first rate. No doubt ALW was at his best during this period. Also, Ted Neely pulls off a very thoughtful performance. It is truly a classic rock opera.
Great movie , poor quality copy January 30, 2010 D. Griffin (Lexington) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This appears to be a cheap burned copy quality, skips entire sections of the movie, not original manufacture, I would have done as well buying on the street.
must have!! December 18, 2009 K. Lorenzato (pittsburgh) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I saw this movie in 1973 when it was first released and it is still just as good today. Although most all reviewers have commented on Ted Neely's "vocal range" it is actually Ian Gillian from Deep Purple who sang the role of Jesus in the movie and on the LP - I played the album to death & beyond back in the 70's. Movie is excellent, even today.
