5 out of 5 stars Powerful tool for studying the booke of Acts (NIV)   August 8, 2010
Stuart Uggen (North Dakota)
The script for this movie is virtually word-for-word from the NIV translation of the Bible. The book of Matthew is also available in this (NIV) video format and the two, Matthew and Acts, make a powerful tandem. Although we have to recognize that the staging of each movie requires some interpretive license for the direcor, so much of the work is plausible that the net effect is highly thought provoking for anyone who is seriously pursuing scriptural truth.

3 out of 5 stars Not captioned or subtitled   April 19, 2010
A. Weis (St. Paul, Minnesota USA)
It is a wonderful video that gives you the visual portrayal of the book of Acts. I purchased this for my church who ministers to Deaf people and rely on captioning. The specifications stated that this video was captioned and subtitled to find that it wasn't - which was a big disappointment. It would have been such a great tool for our bible study.

2 out of 5 stars Unfortunately - extremely disappointed.   March 25, 2010

I purchased this DVD to show to my Sunday School class after we had finished studying the book of Acts. Total flop. I looked around the room and not one of my students was engaged at all. I was so disappointed.

I have no problem with the dialogue being verbatim with the NIV version of the Bible. In fact, I would prefer it that way. However, portions that were ripe for dramatization - e.g. the account of Ananias and Sapphira - were mundane, as they were dramatized only by Luke telling the story to others that were on a ship with him.

I am sorry to say if you are looking to use this as an opportunity to see Scripture come to life after studying it - especially for teens - you should probably look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars A new part of the Bible on DVD   March 23, 2010
Janet L. Weddle (Grass Valley, California)
Our family watches this DVD a lot, and I really liked seeing events from the book of Acts that I've never seen in a movie. Sometimes the actors seem to smile too much, or talk too slowly, but other than that it's great. You're hearing the whole text of the Bible, and can see the chapter and verse in the corner to get to know your way around the book. We often use it for background noise while we're working. That way, it's like an audio Bible, but you can look up and watch your favorite parts. They did a good job with reading between the lines and bringing out things like Paul's angry outbursts, friendships and love between believers, and the different cultures on Paul's missionary journeys. I still prefer the Gospel of John for quality, but Acts is still very good and brings to life events that are seldom shown in films.

3 out of 5 stars Limited but useful   March 15, 2010

Here's the entire book of ACTS, limited by a budget that is very, very small for a project of immense scope. Luke narrates parts; this avoids a few problems. It's handy to be able to access the story by chapters. It may not be good cinema but it's much better than nothing, and it provides some authentic Mediterranean atmosphere. It should be most appreciated in a family circle or Sunday School where people are tolerant of amateurish productions.
